Alcolu is a small town located in Clarendon County, South Carolina. It is situated near the town of Manning and is approximately 60 miles southeast of the state capital, Columbia.
The town of Alcolu is known for its rich history, especially in regards to the lumber industry. In the early 1900s, a sawmill was established in Alcolu, which prompted the growth and development of the town. Many families came to the area seeking employment opportunities at the sawmill.
During the 1940s, Alcolu became the site of a tragic incident in which two young African American boys, George Stinney and his younger brother Johnny, were falsely accused of murdering two white girls. George Stinney was sentenced to death and executed at the age of 14, becoming the youngest person to be executed in the United States in the 20th century. In 2014, his conviction was posthumously overturned.
Today, Alcolu is a quiet town with a population of around 400 people. It is home to the South Carolina Cotton Museum, which showcases the history of the cotton industry in the state. The town also hosts an annual fall festival known as the Alcolu Harvest Festival.
